How long does pest control last?

A dead cockroach lies on its back on a white surface with a blurred background.

Unfortunately, there is no universal answer to this question.

How long pest control lasts depends on three things: the pest species, the treatment method, and the environmental conditions at your property. A cockroach treatment in an inner-Brisbane apartment has very different durability to a spider perimeter treatment on a Noosa acreage.

General pest control treatments usually last a few months, ranging between 3 weeks up to 6 months, if done by a professional.

In addition, general treatments focus on common insects found in most homes, such as cockroaches, spiders, ants, silverfish, among others. However, they do not target pests like termites.

⚠ Disclaimer: The duration of treatments just mentioned above does not apply to pest control of large bugs or other pests such as rats or mice.

Here’s a realistic breakdown by pest type.

Cockroach Treatment: 3–6 Months

Professional cockroach treatment uses a combination of gel baits placed in harbourage zones and residual surface spray applied to skirting boards, under-sink areas and wall junctions. Gel bait remains active for 3–6 months under normal conditions. Residual spray degrades more quickly when exposed to cleaning products and UV light.

Higher risk properties, like older Brisbane homes near drains, apartment buildings with multiple entries, properties adjacent to commercial food premises β€” benefit from 6-monthly treatments because re-infestation pressure from shared infrastructure is ongoing.

Ant Treatment: 3–12 Months Depending on Method

Ant treatment durability varies more than any other pest because it depends heavily on species and method.

Surface spray applied to entry points and trails: 1–3 months before degrading outdoors; up to 6 months indoors in protected areas. Effective for immediate control but doesn’t address the colony.

Slow-acting gel bait (used for Argentine ants, coastal brown ants and similar species): takes 2–3 weeks to work as bait is carried back to the colony, but once the colony is eliminated, protection lasts 6–12 months or longer. The most effective long-term approach.

Annual treatments are sufficient for most Queensland properties. Properties in gardens backing onto bushland, or those with established lawns where colony pressure is higher, benefit from 6-monthly maintenance.

See our ant pest control service for information on which treatment approach suits your property.

Spider Treatment: 3–6 Months

Residual spider treatments degrade faster than most pest products because they’re applied primarily to outdoor surfaces exposed to UV light, rain and heat β€” all of which accelerate breakdown. In Queensland’s climate, outdoor residual treatments typically remain effective for 3–4 months.

This is why spider control is often recommended every 3–6 months rather than annually, particularly for properties with large outdoor areas, eaves, garden beds and pool surrounds. Interior treatments last longer β€” up to 6 months in protected areas.

The 3–6 month window aligns well with Queensland’s seasons: a treatment before summer (October) and one after (April) covers the highest-activity periods.

Rodent Control: Situation-Dependent

Rodent control is fundamentally different to insect pest control β€” baiting and trapping eliminates an active population rather than leaving a residual product that prevents new arrivals. This means treatment duration isn’t the right framework: rodent control works when there’s an active infestation, and prevention is a separate strategy.

After professional treatment, bait stations are typically left in place for 2–3 weeks to capture the full active population. Once the infestation is resolved, the most important next step is exclusion: sealing the entry points that allowed rodents in.

Without exclusion, re-infestation is likely because new rodents from neighbouring properties, drains or gardens will find the same entry points. Properties with persistent rodent issues benefit from ongoing bait station maintenance and regular entry point inspections.

Our rodent pest control service includes entry point advice and a 12-month warranty for covered pest species.

What Reduces Treatment Effectiveness?

Cleaning treated surfaces too soon. Mopping or wiping skirting boards and wall junctions in the first 1–2 weeks after treatment removes the residual product before it has finished working. Avoid cleaning treated surfaces for at least two weeks.

Rain. Outdoor treatments β€” particularly for ants, spiders and cockroach perimeter spray β€” are affected by heavy rain. If your property receives significant rainfall within 24–48 hours of treatment, contact your technician as retreatment of outdoor areas may be needed.

Using DIY sprays after professional treatment. Supermarket pest sprays repel cockroaches and ants rather than killing them. Used after professional treatment, they can drive pests away from bait stations β€” counteracting the professional product.

High pest pressure environments. Properties near drains, restaurants, food processing facilities or with significant garden cover will experience faster re-infestation regardless of treatment quality. These properties need more frequent treatment schedules.

The Honest Answer to “How Long Does It Last?”

So, when asked: how long does pest control lasts, the best answer is that you should implement the treatments periodically during a scheduled period. This period varies depending on your house features and conditions, but to make sure your home is protected throughout the year, most companies recommend quarterly visits. However, it is always better to consult pest control experts to seek a qualified opinion that is specific to your house situation.

For most Queensland households:

  • Annual treatment is the baseline β€” covers cockroaches, ants, spiders and general pests
  • 6-monthly treatment suits higher-risk properties or those with persistent pest pressure
  • Quarterly treatment is for commercial kitchens, food-handling premises and body corporates where compliance and zero tolerance are required
