Rodent Pest Control: Your Questions Answered

  • How long does rodent treatment take to work?

    Rodent bait stations typically begin showing results within 3–7 days, with most activity ceasing within 2–3 weeks as the bait is consumed by the active population. The timeline depends on infestation size, the number of access points on the property, and whether rodents have alternative food sources competing with the bait.

    Initial activity may appear to increase in the first few days after treatment as bait stations are discovered and visited — this is expected behaviour, not a sign that treatment is failing.

    For heavy infestations or properties with significant structural access points (roof cavities, subfloor voids, gaps around plumbing penetrations), a follow-up inspection may be recommended after 2–3 weeks to assess bait consumption, identify new entry points, and confirm the population has been eliminated.

  • Is rodent treatment safe for families and pets?

    Yes — with appropriate precautions. Professional rodent bait is placed in tamper-resistant, lockable bait stations that are inaccessible to children and domestic pets. Bait is never placed on open surfaces. Traps are positioned in locations appropriate to rodent movement patterns (along walls, in roof cavities, under appliances) rather than in areas accessible to children or pets.

    Our technicians hold Queensland Health pest management licences and are trained to place bait stations in locations that maximise rodent contact while minimising any risk to non-target animals. We'll walk you through station locations before we leave so you know what's been placed and where.

    If you have particularly small pets (birds, guinea pigs, small dogs), or pets that spend time in roof spaces or subfloor voids, mention this when booking. We can select placements and product formulations that account for your specific household.

  • Will sealing entry points stop rodents by itself?

    Exclusion is one of the most important long-term strategies for rodent control, but it works best in combination with active treatment — not as a standalone measure. A rat can squeeze through a gap as small as 20mm; a mouse can enter through a gap of 6mm. Common entry points include gaps around water pipes, drainage penetrations, weep holes, roof junctions, subfloor vents and door frames.

    If active rodents are present in the building, sealing entry points alone will trap rodents inside (causing odour and secondary pest issues) and will not address the existing population. Active treatment should always precede exclusion work.

    Our technicians will identify the most significant entry points and activity areas during their visit, and advise on which exclusion works are most likely to reduce long-term risk. Sealing after treatment — once the active population has been addressed — is the correct sequence.

  • How often should I get rodent pest control?

    Most Queensland households don't need scheduled rodent treatments the way they do for general pests like ants or cockroaches — rodent treatments are typically event-driven rather than routine. Book when you see signs of activity: droppings, gnaw marks, noise in roof or wall cavities, or physical sightings.

    That said, properties at higher structural risk benefit from proactive monitoring: older homes with unsealed subfloor voids or roof cavities, properties adjacent to drains or waterways, homes backing onto cane fields or bushland, or properties that have had rodent issues in previous years.

    For high-risk or rental properties where a documented pest-free record has value, annual inspections and proactive bait station maintenance can be arranged.
